Batu Ferringhi beach, the base for the area's activities

Attractions & activities

Things to Do in Batu Ferringhi

Beyond the beach: water sports, a world-class butterfly farm, a hillside spice garden, a fruit farm, a theme park and more — all within a few minutes of the sand.

Batu Ferringhi packs an unusual amount into a small area. The beach is the headline, but the hills immediately behind and the short coast road west toward Teluk Bahang hide some of Penang’s best family attractions.

One honest note: a few places everyone files under “Batu Ferringhi” — Entopia, the Tropical Spice Garden, the fruit farm and ESCAPE — actually sit just west in neighbouring Teluk Bahang, a 5–15 minute drive or a hop on bus 101. We’ve flagged which is which.

Water sports on the beach

This is Penang’s home of beach water sports. Operators such as Ferringhi Sea Sports have run the sand since 1986, offering parasailing, jet-ski and banana-boat rides; most big resorts also have their own beach booths. Agree the price and duration before you start, and pay attention to the safety briefing.

Into the hills: butterflies, spice & jungle

The green ridge behind Batu Ferringhi — around neighbouring Teluk Bahang, a 5–15 minute ride west — hides a cluster of nature attractions, along with the area’s own hidden waterfall.

  • Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm — an immersive indoor-outdoor world of thousands of free-flying butterflies, reptiles and discovery zones (opened 1986, reborn 2016); a top rainy-day and family day out.
  • Tropical Spice Garden — a former rubber estate turned eight lush acres of spice and jungle trails, with guided tours and cooking classes (hilly, with steps).

Both in Teluk Bahang · Grab or bus 101. For the Batu Ferringhi waterfall, go with a guide.

More to explore

Tropical Fruit Farm

Nature Teluk Bahang

A working hilltop orchard of over 250 tropical and exotic fruit varieties, with tastings and valley views. It sits up a steep road, so plan transport both ways — Grab can be scarce later in the day.

ESCAPE Penang

Theme park Families

A three-in-one adventure and water theme park (also in Teluk Bahang) with zip-lines, obstacle courses, tube rides and wave pools — home to one of the world’s longest water slides. A full day out for active families.

Teddyville Museum

Indoor Quirky

A teddy-bear museum on the beach road where the bears act out scenes from Penang life in the “Mini Penang” dioramas — quirky, indoor and good with younger children.

Horse riding & the sand

On the beach

In the late afternoon you’ll often find horses offered for short rides along the beach — a Batu Ferringhi tradition and a favourite photo for families.

Beach bars & nightlife

After the night market, the beach road has a relaxed bar scene. Bora Bora is the best-known beachfront bar — think fire shows, cocktails and feet in the sand — and several resorts run their own beach lounges. It’s easygoing rather than a club scene, which suits the area.

Round the evening off at the night market or over seafood by the sea.

What is Batu Ferringhi 'Bora Bora'?

Bora Bora is a long-running beachfront bar on Batu Ferringhi beach, known for cocktails, music and evening fire shows with your feet in the sand. It's the area's best-known spot for a relaxed beach drink rather than a nightclub.

Is the butterfly farm in Batu Ferringhi?

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm is just west of Batu Ferringhi in Teluk Bahang — about a 10-minute drive or a short ride on bus 101 along the coast road. Most visitors treat it as part of a Batu Ferringhi trip.

Is Batu Ferringhi good for families?

Very. The calm beach, water sports, butterfly farm, fruit farm, theme park, teddy-bear museum and family resorts make it one of the most child-friendly bases in Penang.

What is the Batu Ferringhi iron waterfall?

It refers to a waterfall reached by a jungle trail in the hills behind Batu Ferringhi. It's an off-the-beaten-track spot rather than a signposted attraction, so go with someone who knows the route and don't attempt it alone or after rain. See our nature guide for more.
